Frequently Asked Questions

Who can use Health & Wellness Services?
Every full-time student automatically pays a fee with tuition that provides access to our medical clinic. Students can visit the clinic for primary, preventative or mental health care.

What medical costs do students pay?
Students are charged for supplies, laboratory tests, x-rays and medications, but we work to keep these costs low.

How do students pay for charges?
HWS has separate payment systems for the medical clinic and pharmacy. Most clinic charges can be billed to the student’s WSU account. The pharmacy accepts cash, credit or bank debit cards, checks and Cougar CASH.

How does this work with an insurance plan?
Our pharmacy will directly bill most major insurance companies. Our medical clinic will directly bill the WSU insurance plan (Maksin), Group Health and Kaiser. If requested, we will provide a statement to submit to other insurance companies for reimbursement.

Where do students go for urgent care?
We provide a 24-hour telephone nurse service in addition to urgent care during regular business hours, most Saturdays and class holidays. In emergency situations, students should call 911 or go to the emergency room at the hospital.

Do students need health insurance?
The fee students pay with tuition is not an insurance plan. Because of this, we recommend students have health insurance. WSU offers a reasonably priced insurance plan for students. For more information visit Student Health Insurance .

What kind of care can students get at HWS?
We offer high-quality health care at the only accredited clinic in the region. Students can visit the clinic for primary, preventative or mental health care. Our board certified physicians have expertise in college health, and our pharmacy is conveniently located inside the medical clinic.

What if a student needs continuing care for an existing condition?
Students can schedule an appointment to get to know one of our physicians. It is beneficial for them to bring their medical records to the appointment or have them transferred to our clinic prior to the appointment. Students also can transfer prescriptions to our pharmacy for easy refills.

What does ‘accredited’ mean?
This means an independent agency does a thorough review of our policies and procedures to make sure we meet national standards for high-quality health care. HWS is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care.

Who may access medical records?
Federal and state regulations prohibit us from discussing health information with anyone other than the patient without the patient’s written permission. To maintain privacy, all charges except the mandatory fee will appear on the student’s account as a “Student Health Center” charge.

How does HWS keep medical records?
We recently implemented an electronic medical record system that is similar to many family doctors’ offices and hospitals. This will enhance the quality of patient care, and students will eventually be able to use features such as self check-in, on-line completion of medical forms, secure messaging and on-line appointment scheduling.

How do students comply with the University’s measles requirement?
A form outlining the University’s measles requirement is mailed out to students in their WSU Offer Packet. This form also is available on the HWS Web site. Students can submit their immunization records to HWS by mail fax or through our Web site at www.hws.wsu.edu.

Do students need to be vaccinated for meningitis?
Meningitis is a rare but potentially deadly disease. We recommend that all students get vaccinated – especially those in dense living situations such as residence halls and Greek housing. Students can get the vaccine at our medical clinic when they arrive on campus.
