Medical Services

MEDICAL SERVICES

Students may see a physician, physicians assistant, or a nurse practitioner by appointment. Most appointments are 15 minutes long, but can be extended for conditions requiring more time. When making an appointment, give the receptionist as much information as possible so that a suitable appointment can be made.

There is no charge to be seen by a health care provider. There may be charges for supplies used in the course of treatment.

After Hours Care

Health Care is available 24-hours a day. When the Clinic is closed call the telphone nurse at 335-3575. For additional urgent care options, click here.

 

Allergy Injections

Allergy injections are given during regular clinic hours. The student must supply his or her own antigens, schedules, and instructions from a referring physician. Allergy extract can be stored in the clinic.

This is a valuable, extremely cost-effective service to those students who must have allergy injections on a regular basis. There is a charge for this service. No allergy testing is done in the clinic.

Emergency Services

Emergency services are available through Pullman Regional Hospital (332-2541). Any costs incurred are the responsibility of the student.

Hospital Care

All HWS physicians are on the active medical staff of the Pullman Regional Hospital. This arrangement permits HWS physicians to admit students and follow their care in the hospital. This connection allows for continuity of care for the student. Any hospital costs incurred are the responsibility of the student.

Immunizations

The clinic offers immunizations and TB testing.

Available immunizations include tetanus, diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, IG, typhoid, polio, rabies, MMR (measles, mumps and rubella), yellow fever, meningococcal meningitis and influenza. There are charges for administering all immunizations.

Arrangements can be made for special immunizations such as pneumovax.

International Travel Clinic

An International Travel Clinic is available by appointment to counsel, educate, immunize, and determine what preventative measures are recommended for students planning to travel abroad.

Immunizations and vaccines available:

Initial pre-travel consultations are by appointment, which should be made at least 3 months before expected departure date. The earlier the better.

Laboratory Services

Health and Wellness Services (HWS) provides on site laboratory services contracted with outside laboratories.  Some tests may be billed to your student account and some laboratory tests may be billed to the student’s insurance directly.  See the HWS list of charges for a list of tests that will be billed to your account.

Medical Supply Sales and Rental

Crutches are available for purchase through the clinic, and partial credit for the cost can be received if the crutches are returned in good condition.

Nurse Clinic

Nurse Clinic is for students with acute infections such as sore throats, coughs, earaches, and urinary tract infections.

The registered nurses who staff this area follow physician approved protocols for conditions seen here. If a student's symptoms fall outside these protocols, the student is seen by a health care provider.

One goal of the nurse clinic is to help students learn when self care is appropriate and when the student should seek medical attention.

An appointment is required to be seen in the Nurse Clinic. There is no charge to be seen in Nurse Clinic, but there may be a charge for supplies consumed in the course of treatment.

Nutrition Clinic

The WSU Nutrition Clinic is a free service available to all WSU students to learn more about the role of nutrition in good health, receive confidential nutrition counseling and address your unique nutrition questions and goals.

Observation Room

The clinic has a special area for students requiring close observation or on-going medical care during clinic hours. Examples include: seizures, asthma, and acute abdominal and chest pains. This area allows students to receive treatment over the entire day without the expense of a hospital admission. Students requiring overnight observation are admitted to Pullman Regional Hospital.

Orthopedic/Casting

The clinic operates an orthopedic/casting room in which casting or the fitting of orthopedic devices can be performed.

Other Services

Seasonal affective light disorder therapy is available in the clinic on a first-come, sign-in basis. ECG and slit lamp examinations are used by health care providers when appropriate.

 

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy services are available from a community PT by referral from a health care provider. There is a charge for this service.

Sports Medicine

The WSU Health and Wellness Services staff is composed of many providers with different backgrounds and interests in medicine. Three of the providers take a special interest in Sports Medicine, Dr. Dennis Garcia, Dr. Steven Cox and Dr. Jeff Radakovich. Students may see a physician by appointment for treatment. WSU students who are currently enrolled and have paid the student health fee are eligible.

INH Therapy for TB Prevention

The clinic provides appropriate treatment and follow up of students who test positive for TB.

Telephone Nurse  

A registered nurse is available by telephone 24-hours a day to provide accurate information and appropriate recommendations for students who call  with questions. This frequently used service provides an opportunity for students to ask questions confidentially and receive authoritative answers on a variety of health topics.

Students who call during clinic hours speak with a nurse at Health and Wellness Service.  Students who need consultation with a nurse after clinic hours are directed to call a local number to speak with a nurse at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.  This toll-free service is available to students anytime the clinic is closed.

Tobacco Cessation Program

We offer free, one-on-one tobacco cessation counseling for WSU students and employees. While supplies last, nicotine replacement treatments are available free to students and at a reduced fee to WSU employees. Wart Treatment

Treatment of various types of warts is available by appointment. Liquid nitrogen is used as a primary therapy.

Women's Health Clinic

The women's clinic, staffed by a nurse practitioner, is reserved for routine women's health care including contraception, fitting diaphragms, annual PAP smears, sexually transmitted infection testing, and breast examinations. There is a charge for the laboratory tests conducted in the Women's Clinic.
