Washington State University requires that all international students with non-immigrant status (except Canadians), who are enrolled for one credit or more, be enrolled in the WSU Student Medical Insurance Plan. However, International Students may submit an equal or better alternative plan to receive a waiver.

THE DEADLINE TO SUBMIT YOUR SUBSTITUTE INSURANCE PLAN IS August 29, 2008
Substitute insurance plans must meet the following University requirements:
A. The plan must provide coverage within the state of Washington.
B. Total maximum lifetime coverage of $100,000 or more for health conditions.
C. Deductible of $250 per policy year (not higher).
D. Hospitalization:
- Emergency Room coverage of $1,500 or more per emergency.
- Hospital Room & Board coverage of $1,500 or more per day.
- Surgery Coverage of 80% or more.
- Anesthesia Expenses paid at 80% or more.
E. Physician payments covered at a minimum of 80%.
F. Accidental Death and Dismemberment coverage of $10,000 or more.
G. Prescription Drug coverage at a minimum of 80% for generic and 60% for brand name drugs.
H. Mental or Nervous Disorder Inpatient and Outpatient expenses (combined) paid as any other sickness up to at least $3,000 per policy year.
I. Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Treatment covered up to $2,000 or more.
J. Pregnancy covered as any other sickness.
K. Pre-existing condition limitation is no more than three months.
L. Repatriation covered up to $7,500 and Medical Evacuation up to $10,000 or more.
Should your plan meet or exceed these conditions, a waiver will be granted for the semester and you will not be required to purchase the WSU Student Medial Insurance Plan. International students must continue to provide proof of current medical insurance coverage at the beginning of EACH semester to remain eligible for this exception.

Your substitute insurance plan must be submitted for review in English, be active on or before the start of the semester (August 25, 2008), and continue with coverage through the end of the semester (December 19, 2008).
